Hanne Bare, also known as Hanne Blank Boyd,[1] is an American historian, writer, and editor. Her written works include Virgin: The Untouched History, Straight: The Surprisingly Short History of Heterosexuality, and The Unapologetic Fat Girl'southward Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts.

Biography [edit]

Hanne Blank was born in Northampton, Massachusetts and grew up in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area, condign a classically trained musician and and so a formally educated historian.[2] As a musician, she was a Swain of the Boston Academy Tanglewood Institute and was the 1991 recipient of the George Whitefield Chadwick medal for work equally a proponent of contemporary art music.[3]

She began writing erotica at age 17, and published the zine Zaftig! while a doctoral pupil at Brandeis University.[4] Her starting time book, Big Big Dear: A Sourcebook for People of Size and Those Who Beloved Them, was published by Greenery Press.[iv] After writing and editing several books of erotic fiction, she became an editor of Scarletletters.com, a website featuring erotic writing for a female audience by female authors, and a related website Scarleteen, focused on sexual practice education, which were both owned by Heather Corinna.[4] In 2003, her book Unruly Appetites was published by Seal Press.[4]

Every bit an independent scholar, she was a 2004-2005 Scholar of the Constitute For Didactics and Inquiry on Women at Towson University, Maryland.[five]

Big Big Love: A Sourcebook on Sex for People of Size and Those Who Dearest Them [edit]

In a 2001 review for the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy, Martha Cornog writes, "Bare starts out by debunking the cultural truism in America that sex and fat don't mix."[10] The revised edition, published in 2011, was reviewed by Sheila Addison in Fat Studies.[11]

Virgin: The Untouched History [edit]

Straight: The Surprisingly Brusque History of Heterosexuality [edit]

In a 2011 review of Straight: The Surprisingly Curt History of Heterosexuality, Kirkus Reviews writes, "In this relate of changing sexual mores, the writer challenges the common preconception today that the stardom between homosexuality and heterosexuality is legitimate" and "The author uses wisdom and wit to substantiate her contention that honey and passion are not definable past biological science."[7] A review from Publishers Weekly states, "From its thorough merely brisk explorations of sexual orientation's intersections with sex, gender, and romance, this illuminating study examines our presuppositions and makes a powerful, provocative argument that heterosexuality—mazy, unscientific, and new—may be merely "a particular configuration of sexual practice and power in a particular historical moment.""[17]

The Unapologetic Fat Daughter'southward Guide to Exercise and Other Incendiary Acts [edit]

A 2012 review of The Unapologetic Fat Girl's Guide to Do and Other Incendiary Acts by Publishers Weekly states, "In this empowering and informative book Bare contends that it'south a fat woman'southward birthright to motility and enjoy her body."[23] Pauline Baughman writes in a review for Library Periodical, "This unique guide is anything simply a diet and practise book."[24]
